Fox Den Salon
Deposits: Supporting a Livable Wage and Valuing The Craft

FIND OUT WHAT ELSE IS GOING ON

Welcome to Fox Den Salon! We’re thrilled to have you here, and today, we want to dive into a topic that’s important for both our clients and our stylists: why we require deposits for booking appointments.

First things first, let’s talk about why deposits are necessary. As a salon, our stylists are not just artists—they’re professionals with years of ongoing education, training, certifications, and licensure under their belts. They’ve honed their skills, obtained their licenses, and continue to invest in ongoing education to stay at the top of their game. It’s not just a job for them; it’s a career that they’re passionate about and dedicated to.

Now, let’s get into the nitty-gritty. In the United States, the average wage for stylists varies depending on factors like location, experience, and whether they’re paid hourly or on commission. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of May 2020, the median annual wage for hairdressers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists was around $27,630, with only the top 10% earning more than $52,000 per year. While it’s essential to note that many stylists rely heavily on tips to supplement their income, and some workers do not reliably report tips, those tips are also absent when clients cancel last minute or no-call-no-show appointments.

Speaking of income, let’s talk about commission-based stylists and how salon appointments play into their livelihood. In commission-based salons like Fox Den, stylists typically receive a percentage of the service fees they perform.

When a client books an appointment, that time slot is essentially reserved for them. If the client cancels last minute or simply doesn’t show up, the stylist loses out on potential income for that time. It’s not just an inconvenience; it directly impacts their earnings and ability to make ends meet.

That’s where deposits come in. By requiring a deposit when booking appointments, we’re not only ensuring that our stylists’ time is respected but also helping them secure a more stable income. Deposits serve as a commitment from clients, reducing the likelihood of no-shows and last-minute cancellations. It’s a win-win situation for everyone involved: clients get the peace of mind knowing their appointment is secured and reducing the amount due at the time of the service, and stylists can focus on delivering exceptional service without worrying about lost income.

We understand that life happens, and sometimes, cancellations are unavoidable.

That’s why we have a 48 hour cancellation policy in place to accommodate unforeseen circumstances.

We’re here to work with our clients and find solutions that are fair and reasonable for both parties.

At Fox Den Salon, we believe in supporting our community, and that includes the stylists that perform services. By requiring deposits for booking appointments, we’re not only ensuring a smoother experience for everyone but also advocating for valuing the expertise of these artists and a livable wage in the beauty industry.

So the next time you book an appointment with us, know that your deposit is more than just a reservation—it’s an investment in our stylists’ careers and the quality of service you receive.

Thank you for choosing Fox Den Salon, where we’re dedicated to making you look and feel your absolute best. We can’t wait to see you in the chair

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT:

It is with great respect and humility that we acknowledge that we gather and create on the traditional land of the Dakota people and the many other tribes that have stewarded it for generations.  This beautiful and often complicated city has been the ancestral home to the Dakota people, as well as a home to the Ojibwe (Anishinaabeg), Ho-Chunk, Cheyenne, Oto, Iowa, Sauk and Meskwaki people over generations.  The continual strategic disenfranchisement of the colonial settlers on the native peoples of this land have diminished but not deterred the capacity for acknowledgement of the many gifts, strengths, voices, and achievements of the indigenous people that have come before, as well as  those that remain in our communities.
