SHOP LOCAL: BLACK OWNED BUSINESSES

FIND OUT WHAT ELSE IS GOING ON

With the recent events surrounding the Black Lives Matter Movement and the Covid-19 pandemic it’s more important than ever to support local Black-owned businesses in the twin cities area. A way to make a difference is by making conscientious decisions during your day to day life to speak out against racial injustice through action. We’ve compiled a list of our favorite locally owned Black restaurants that you need to visit!

SMOKE IN THE PIT

For the less vegan inclined, we have the place for you too! Located at 3733 Chicago Avenue MPLS, MN 55407, Smoke in the Pit stars in soul food staples including chicken, ribs, and catfish! A personal fan favorite is the catfish nuggets paired with fries and baked beans. They have the ultimate comfort food and will have everyone feeling fed and happy.

SOUL BOWL

With a combination of pop-up fast service and good old soul food, Soul Bowl at 520 N 4th street has to make our favorites list. They have worked so hard to contribute to their community and the food is pretty darn good too. Our stylist go nuts for the A.A. sandwich, but the build you own bowl option will satisfy even the pickiest eaters. They also cater for events, which we definitely will be utilizing in the future!

TRIO

Our salon has always been a supporter of ethically and cruelty free sourced products. Found on 610 W Lake St, Minneapolis, MN 55408 is Trio. Trio shares a similar passion, making them a favorite among our stylists! Trio serves classic American vegan soul food, our favorites include: Classic Double Cheeseburger, Mac & Cheese, and BBQ Pit. They’re right down the street from our Lake Street location, so you can check them out for lunch after your next cut.

 HANDSOME HOG

The Handsome Hog is pig focused contemporary southern restaurant located in lower town at 203 E. 6th Street, St. Paul MN 55101. They serve awesome Southern food all day long from their sure-to-quench-your-appetite brunch to their late-night menu! Our recommendation is the fried chicken and waffles and their bourbon selection is legendary.

This is by no means a comprehensive list of all the great BIPOC+ businesses in or around the Minneapolis area. Please feel free to share your personal favorites!

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT:

It is with great respect and humility that we acknowledge that we gather and create on the traditional land of the Dakota people and the many other tribes that have stewarded it for generations.  This beautiful and often complicated city has been the ancestral home to the Dakota people, as well as a home to the Ojibwe (Anishinaabeg), Ho-Chunk, Cheyenne, Oto, Iowa, Sauk and Meskwaki people over generations.  The continual strategic disenfranchisement of the colonial settlers on the native peoples of this land have diminished but not deterred the capacity for acknowledgement of the many gifts, strengths, voices, and achievements of the indigenous people that have come before, as well as  those that remain in our communities.
