Horns & Honey is a collection of pieces that embody Blythe M Davis’ two current artistic mediums- beeswax and bike parts.

Artists Statement:

I find encaustic medium (a mixture of beeswax and resin) an intriguing substance with which to paint. Its equally delicate and durable and feels incredibly organic and dynamic, given that fire and heat are required for the creation process. Encaustic painting allows me to visually experiment with the conflicting states of harmony and struggle while at the same time practice “letting go.” In my encaustic work, I gain inspiration from the concepts of nature, volatility, human interaction, impermanence, our current place in time and the ways in which we make our mark on the world.

With bike sculpture I strive to find beauty in what others might deem ugly. I am often inspired by the rough and ragged aspects of the world – those that have withstood the battle against time, space and weather. Though not a proponent of hunting for sport, I find the concept of using trophies to display one’s achievements an intriguing social practice. With these bike pieces, I aim to whimsically celebrate our incredibly vibrant Twin Cities bike culture while finding a new creative life for these bike parts in each one-of-a kind sculptural piece.

Blythe M. Davis has been a life-long resident of the Midwest and currently resides and works in Minneapolis, MN. Blythe has obtained degrees in psychology and the healing therapies of massage and shiatsu and has been an art maker since childhood. Self-taught, Blythe uses experimentation as a main means of learning each new medium that she explores. Travel is often great inspiration for Blythe’s new artistic persuit. A trip to Asheville, North Carolina in 2015 was the spark that led Blythe to begin painting with encaustic medium and more recent visit to Denver led Blythe to start playing with discarded bike parts to create bike sculptures. When not making art, Blythe M. Davis relieves stress and pain in human bodies at her private bodywork practice.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT:

It is with great respect and humility that we acknowledge that we gather and create on the traditional land of the Dakota people and the many other tribes that have stewarded it for generations.  This beautiful and often complicated city has been the ancestral home to the Dakota people, as well as a home to the Ojibwe (Anishinaabeg), Ho-Chunk, Cheyenne, Oto, Iowa, Sauk and Meskwaki people over generations.  The continual strategic disenfranchisement of the colonial settlers on the native peoples of this land have diminished but not deterred the capacity for acknowledgement of the many gifts, strengths, voices, and achievements of the indigenous people that have come before, as well as  those that remain in our communities.
